Our original plan was to spend the full 8 days between Bangkok and Phuket — the safer, more familiar choice. It was a casual recommendation from our guesthouse owner in Bangkok that changed our itinerary: “Krabi is the one that stays with you.”
We changed our plan on the spot, trimmed a night from Phuket, and added three nights in Krabi. That turned out to be the best decision of the trip. Three nights isn’t a lot — but with the right structure, it’s exactly enough to see everything worth seeing and still feel like you had time to breathe.
Here’s our complete account: every activity, every cost, every honest opinion.

This structure is what we’d recommend to anyone with 3 nights — it fits the 3 main experiences without feeling rushed.
🌅 Day 1 (Arrival from Bangkok) — Ao Nang + Fire Show + Night Market
Flew Bangkok → Krabi (domestic flight, ~1 hour, no immigration needed). SUV taxi to Ao Nang (~600 THB for 4 people with luggage). Early check-in. Afternoon: explored Ao Nang Beach, booked ALL tours at tourist information centers — this is critical, do it day one. Evening: Fire Show at 6:30 PM. Dinner at Ao Nang Night Market.
♨️ Day 2 — Hot Springs + Emerald Pool (Morning) + Railay Beach (Afternoon)
Half-day Hot Springs & Emerald Pool package tour — hotel pickup 8 AM, back by 1 PM. Quick lunch. Long-tail boat to Railay Beach by 3 PM, stayed until 5:30 PM (last boat ~6 PM — set an alarm). Night Market again — we couldn’t resist the fish barbecue a second time.

01. 🏖️ Ao Nang Beach — Your Launchpad for Everything

Let’s be upfront about something most Krabi guides don’t tell you: Ao Nang Beach is not Krabi’s most beautiful beach. It’s the main tourist hub — and it shows. Long-tail boats pull in and out constantly, ferrying people to Railay. Part of it genuinely feels like a parking area for boats.
That said, Ao Nang works beautifully as a base — and that’s how we approached it. We stayed five minutes’ walk from the beach, and having everything logistically close made our three days significantly easier.
What Ao Nang Beach is genuinely great for:
- Booking tours: Tourist Information Centers along the main beach strip are competitive. Walk at least two or three, compare prices, negotiate. We saved 300 THB per person on the Phi Phi tour by comparing.
- Evening atmosphere: The beach at sunset, with fire shows starting and boats heading in, has a genuine energy that grows on you.
- Thai massages: We got one both evenings we weren’t exhausted from tours. Quality is high and prices are very reasonable.
- Budget breakfasts: 7-Eleven every morning (~100 THB for two people). Sandwiches, noodles, coffee. We saved money for experiences.
One thing we didn’t expect: there’s a dark water canal running along part of the Ao Nang strip that smells unpleasant. It’s not ruinous, but worth knowing before you arrive.

02. 🔥 The Evening Fire Show — The Unplanned Highlight

We stumbled onto this. No itinerary planned for it, no one told us to look out for it. On our first night, walking back from dinner, we heard music and saw orange light about 300 metres down the beach. We followed it.
Every evening after sunset, multiple fire shows happen simultaneously at different spots along Ao Nang Beach. Fire dancers perform with spinning torches, fire hoops, batons — all against the backdrop of the darkening sea and distant limestone silhouettes. No tickets, no stages, no tourist-entry setup. You just walk toward whatever fire you can see and watch.
We stood there for 40 minutes on night one. Went back deliberately on night two. This became one of our strongest Krabi memories and it cost nothing.
Tips from two visits:
- Walk the full length of the beach before settling — quality varies. The most polished performance was near the middle of the main strip.
- Arrive by 6:15 PM for the best viewing spot. Shows begin around 6:30 PM and run about 30 minutes.
- The show closer to where long-tail boats launch tends to be less crowded.

If you’ve watched YouTube videos or read blogs about Thailand, you’ve probably heard people compare every night market to Phuket or Chiang Mai. So, let’s set the right expectation first.
Yes, Ao Nang Night Market is smaller than Phuket’s famous weekend markets and much smaller than Chiang Mai’s Sunday Night Market. But honestly? We never felt disappointed. In fact, it ended up becoming one of our favourite evening experiences in Krabi.
Sometimes, a smaller market means less walking, fewer crowds, and more time enjoying the food instead of deciding what to eat.
We visited the market on both nights of our stay in Krabi, and it quickly became our go-to place for dinner. The atmosphere was lively, with music playing in the background, colourful food stalls lined up on both sides, and the irresistible aroma of freshly grilled seafood filling the air.
Our Favourite Part? The Food.
One thing we absolutely loved was the variety. Whether you’re a vegetarian, seafood lover, or someone who enjoys trying unusual local dishes, there’s something for everyone.
You’ll find plenty of options including:

One of the things we really enjoyed was not ordering one big meal.
Instead, we bought small portions from different stalls, shared everything between us, and kept trying something new as we walked around the market. It turned dinner into an experience rather than just another meal. By the end of the evening, we had tasted more than half a dozen different dishes without spending a fortune.
The Meal We Still Talk About
Out of everything we ate during our 8-day Thailand trip, one dish still stands out.
The whole grilled barramundi fish, cooked fresh over charcoal and served with lime, chilli, and Thai spices, was simply incredible. The fish was perfectly cooked, juicy, smoky, and packed with flavour. Even months after returning home, it’s still the meal we remember the most.

- Fresh mango juice, which became our favourite drink after walking around in Krabi’s afternoon heat.

Shopping After Dinner
The night market isn’t just about food.
Once we finished eating, we spent quite a bit of time exploring the shopping stalls. You’ll find everything from souvenirs and fridge magnets to handmade gifts, bags, beachwear, T-shirts, dresses, accessories, and local handicrafts.
We ended up buying a few dresses along with some souvenirs to bring back home. Prices were reasonable, and most shops were happy to negotiate politely if you were buying multiple items.
Our Best Tip
If there’s one piece of advice we’d give every traveller visiting Ao Nang Night Market, it’s this:
Don’t buy from the very first stall you see.
It’s tempting because everything looks delicious, but walk through the entire market first. Compare prices, see which stalls have the biggest crowds, and then decide where to eat.
That’s exactly what we did.
The grilled fish stall that became our favourite was tucked away near the back of the market. Had we stopped at the entrance, we would have completely missed what turned out to be the best meal of our entire Thailand trip.

Even if we stayed in Krabi for another week, we’d probably end up having dinner here almost every night. 04. ♨️ Hot Springs & Emerald Pool — The One We Nearly Skipped
💰 ~$30/person (package tour) ✦ Unexpectedly Best
If someone had asked us before our trip which places we were most excited about in Krabi, Hot Springs and Emerald Pool wouldn’t have even made our list.
Like many travellers, we had read mixed reviews online. Some people called it overrated, others said it was too touristy, and a few even suggested skipping it altogether in favour of island tours.
Our thought process was simple:
“We’re coming all the way to Krabi for beaches, limestone cliffs and island hopping… why spend almost half a day travelling 45 km into a forest?”
Looking back now, we’re incredibly glad we ignored those reviews.
By the end of the day, this became our second favourite experience in Krabi, just behind the Phi Phi Islands tour.
Sometimes, the internet gets it wrong.
Why We Chose a Package Tour (And Why We’d Recommend It)
You can certainly visit these attractions on your own, but after comparing all the options, we realised a package tour made much more sense—both financially and practically.
Before booking, we visited three different tourist information centres in Ao Nang to compare prices.
The quotes ranged between 1,100 and 1,300 THB per person, and we booked the cheapest one.
Our package included:

Suddenly, the package tour becomes excellent value for money.
For us, it wasn’t just cheaper—it was completely stress-free.
First Stop – Krabi Hot Springs
As soon as we arrived, we could hear the sound of flowing water long before we actually saw the springs.
Instead of one large pool, the hot springs consist of natural rock pools with warm mineral-rich water flowing through the forest.
The water wasn’t boiling hot like we’d imagined.
Instead, it felt similar to stepping into a perfectly warm bath after a long day of walking.
We had never experienced a natural hot spring before, so simply sitting there surrounded by lush greenery, listening to birds and flowing water, felt incredibly relaxing.
It wasn’t luxurious.
It wasn’t man-made.
And that’s exactly why we loved it.
For around an hour, we completely forgot about our phones, cameras and itinerary.
We simply sat there and enjoyed the moment.

Blue Pool – A Place You Can Only Admire
Our next stop was the Blue Pool.
Unlike Emerald Pool, swimming isn’t allowed here, and at first we wondered whether it was worth visiting.
Within seconds of arriving, we understood why.
The water has an almost unreal electric-blue colour, created naturally by minerals beneath the surface.
Even though we had seen dozens of photographs before visiting, none of them prepared us for what it actually looked like in person.
It almost looked edited.
We spent nearly 20 minutes simply standing there, taking photos and trying to understand how water could naturally have that colour.
Ironically, none of the pictures or videos we captured came close to showing how beautiful it really was.
Sometimes, a place simply has to be experienced.
Emerald Pool – Like Swimming in Nature’s Own Infinity Pool
After walking through the rainforest trail, we finally reached the Emerald Pool, and it instantly became our favourite stop of the day.
Unlike the Blue Pool, swimming is allowed here.
The water had a stunning emerald-green colour, created by sunlight filtering through the dense forest canopy and the natural minerals beneath the surface.
The temperature was pleasantly cool, making it incredibly refreshing after the short walk.
We spent around 30–40 minutes swimming, relaxing and simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
There was no loud music.
No beach clubs.
No luxury resorts.
Just crystal-clear water surrounded by tropical rainforest.
It was one of those rare travel moments where everything felt calm.

If you can, visit earlier in the day.
The water looks even more vibrant before larger crowds arrive, and you’ll have a much better chance of taking beautiful photos.
Our Honest Opinion
One thing we’ve realised after travelling is that expectations can completely change an experience.
Many of the negative reviews we read compared Hot Springs and Emerald Pool to luxury spas or commercial attractions.
That’s the wrong comparison.
This isn’t a five-star wellness resort.
This is nature doing what nature has been doing for thousands of years.
Warm mineral water flowing through a rainforest.
Crystal-clear pools formed naturally.
Birdsong instead of loud music.
If you visit expecting that kind of experience, we genuinely believe you’ll leave with a smile—just like we did.

Absolutely.
In fact, if we ever return to Krabi, we’d happily book the same tour again.
It was peaceful, refreshing, affordable, and completely different from the beaches and island tours that most visitors focus on.

05. ⛵ Railay Beach — The Most Beautiful Place We’ve Ever Been
💰 200 THB return (~$6) ✦ Non-Negotiable
Railay is inaccessible by road. Limestone cliffs rise on all sides — the only way in is by long-tail boat from Ao Nang Beach (200 THB return, ~20 minutes). This single logistical fact has preserved Railay in a way no planning could replicate. It cannot have a road built to it. A tour bus cannot arrive. You have to get in a small wooden boat, and that creates a natural gate that keeps the character intact.
Getting There
Go to Ao Nang Beach → look for the long-tail boat booking counters along the beach → 200 THB per person return → 20-minute ride past limestone formations. The ride over is already part of the experience.
⚠️ The Last Boat Warning — Take This Seriously The last long-tail boat from Railay back to Ao Nang leaves at approximately 6 PM. Missing it is not a minor inconvenience — options become very limited and expensive. We watched two couples miss it on the day we visited. Set a phone alarm for 5:30 PM the moment you arrive.
What We Did at Railay
Railay West Beach — the main beach. Clear water, soft sand, unobstructed views of limestone karsts. We sat here for two hours and didn’t feel the time pass. One of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen — and we’ve been to beaches in Sri Lanka, Bali, Singapore, and multiple parts of Thailand.
Railay East Beach — quieter, mangrove-fringed, completely different character. Worth the 10-minute walk from West Beach. Far fewer people.
Diamond Cave (Phra Nang Nai Cave) — limestone cave with beautiful formations. Small entry fee. About 25 minutes. Worth it if you have time.
The Railay Viewpoint hike — we didn’t do this due to time, but it’s highly recommended. Steep and muddy with ropes, and the view of the entire Railay Peninsula from the top is reportedly extraordinary. Add an extra hour if you want to include it.
The Food Situation at Railay
Restaurants at Railay charge significantly more than Ao Nang — everything arrives by boat. We made the mistake of not carrying snacks. Carry water and something from 7-Eleven before you board the long-tail. Not optional advice — it’s how you avoid overpriced, hungry food decisions mid-afternoon.

06. 🏝️ Phi Phi Island Full-Day Speedboat Tour — The Most Spectacular Day

If someone asked us to pick just one paid activity in Krabi, we’d recommend the Phi Phi Islands Tour without hesitation.
While Railay Beach was our favourite place overall because of its peaceful atmosphere, the Phi Phi Islands Tour was easily the most exciting and unforgettable day of our trip.
Every stop looked completely different from the previous one. One moment we were walking on powdery white sand, the next we were swimming inside a hidden lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, and later we were snorkelling alongside colourful tropical fish.
It was one of those rare tours where we never once looked at the time.
How We Booked the Tour (And Saved Money)
One thing we quickly learned in Krabi is never book the first tour you’re offered.
The first travel agency we visited quoted us 2,500 THB per person.
Instead of booking immediately, we walked into two more tourist information centres nearby and compared prices.
Within fifteen minutes, we found the exact same tour for 2,200 THB per person.
The itinerary, speedboat, inclusions and operator were practically identical.
A little negotiation saved us 600 THB for two people, enough for another nice dinner in Krabi.

These tours run on a tight schedule, and they won’t wait if you’re late.
First Stop – Bamboo Island
About 40 minutes after leaving the pier, we reached our first destination.
And what a way to begin the day.
Bamboo Island looked exactly like the tropical islands you see in travel brochures—soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and rows of trees providing natural shade.
Compared to the places we visited later in the day, Bamboo Island felt incredibly peaceful.
There were no loud crowds.
No rush.
Just enough time to walk barefoot along the beach, take photos and simply enjoy the surroundings.
Looking back, it was the perfect introduction before the more popular stops.

Maya Bay – Beautiful, But Manage Your Expectations
Maya Bay was probably the place we were most excited about before arriving in Thailand.
After all, it’s the beach made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie The Beach.
Walking onto the beach for the first time was definitely exciting.
The towering limestone cliffs surrounding the bay were every bit as dramatic as we’d imagined.
But…
This was also the only stop where our expectations were slightly higher than reality.
Despite the visitor limits introduced to protect the environment, Maya Bay was still the busiest place we visited all day.
Finding a quiet photo spot near the entrance wasn’t easy.
Our Tip
Instead of stopping near the entrance like most visitors, walk further down the beach.
The crowds become noticeably thinner, and you’ll get much better photographs.
Would we still recommend visiting?
Absolutely.
Just don’t expect to have the beach all to yourself.
Viking Cave & Monkey Beach
These were shorter stops, but they added variety to the day.
At Viking Cave, our guide explained the fascinating history behind the famous bird’s nest harvesting industry while we admired the cave from the boat.
A few minutes later, we stopped near Monkey Beach, where several playful macaques were relaxing along the shoreline.
Watching them from the boat was entertaining, although we wouldn’t call it a major highlight of the tour.
Sometimes nature decides how much wildlife you get to see.
Pileh Lagoon – The Most Beautiful Place We Saw All Day
If Maya Bay was the place everyone talks about…
Pileh Lagoon was the place we couldn’t stop talking about afterwards.
The moment our speedboat entered the lagoon, every conversation on board simply stopped.
Surrounded on all sides by towering limestone cliffs, the lagoon looked almost unreal.
The water was so clear that we could see right to the bottom.
It wasn’t just blue.
It wasn’t just green.
It constantly changed shades depending on where the sunlight hit the water.
Swimming here felt like floating inside a giant natural swimming pool.
We spent around 20 minutes in the water, but honestly, it felt like five.
None of us wanted to leave.
If someone asked us for the single most beautiful place on the entire tour…
Pileh Lagoon wins.
Without question.

Lunch at Phi Phi Don
By lunchtime, we were definitely hungry.
The buffet was served at Phi Phi Don, the only inhabited island in the Phi Phi group.
There were plenty of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, along with rice, curries, fruits and desserts.
Was it the best food we had in Thailand?
No.
But after a busy morning of swimming and island hopping, it was fresh, filling and exactly what we needed before continuing the tour.
We also spent some free time exploring the nearby shops before heading back to the boat.
Snorkelling – A Surprise Highlight
Before this trip, neither of us had much snorkelling experience.
We almost considered skipping it.
We’re so glad we didn’t.
The tour operator provided everything—life jackets, snorkelling masks and snorkels—and our guide explained exactly what to do before we entered the water.
Within seconds, colourful tropical fish were swimming all around us.
It felt like entering another world.
Even several people in our group who had never snorkelled before came back smiling and saying it was their favourite part of the tour.
If you’re nervous…
Don’t be.
This is probably one of the best places to try snorkelling for the first time.
A Small Warning About the Speedboat
One thing many blogs don’t mention…
The speedboat is fast.
And depending on the weather, the sea can get quite rough.
The journey to the first island took around one hour, and occasionally the boat bounced over the waves.
If you usually experience motion sickness while travelling, take your medicine before boarding the boat.
It’s a simple precaution that can make the rest of your day much more enjoyable.
Our Honest Verdict
If we had skipped this tour, our Krabi trip wouldn’t have felt complete.
Was Maya Bay slightly more crowded than we expected?
Yes.
Did that ruin the experience?
Not even close.
Because the rest of the day was simply incredible.
From relaxing on Bamboo Island to floating inside the breathtaking waters of Pileh Lagoon and snorkelling with colourful tropical fish, every stop offered something completely different.
This wasn’t just another island-hopping tour.
It was one of the best travel experiences we’ve ever had.

We spent 3 nights in Krabi and 3 nights in Phuket (Le Cartier Hotel, Patong Beach) on the same trip — so this is a genuine direct comparison, not a theoretical one.

Our verdict: If we had to pick one, we’d pick Krabi — specifically because of Railay Beach, which is unlike anything Phuket has. But we’re very glad we did both. Three nights each was exactly the right split.

How many days do you actually need in Krabi?
Three nights is exactly right for everything we describe — Hot Springs, Railay, and Phi Phi Island. Two nights works if you drop the Hot Springs. Four nights is ideal if you want to add Tiger Cave Temple (1,260 steps, panoramic views — we had to skip it and genuinely regret it), rock climbing at Railay, or simply a slower pace.
Is March a good time to visit Krabi?
March is peak dry season — calm seas (critical for the Phi Phi speedboat and Railay long-tail), excellent snorkelling visibility, reliable sunshine. Tradeoff: it’s busy and prices reflect that. The Phi Phi tour was crowded at popular spots. Shoulder season (May or Oct-Nov) offers quieter conditions at the cost of some weather unpredictability. Rainy season (June-October) is genuinely rainier but great for budget travellers — prices drop and there are still good weather windows.
Is Krabi worth it — honestly?
Yes, without qualification. The combination of Railay Beach, the Phi Phi Island Tour, and the Hot Springs in three days is genuinely extraordinary. The fire show and Night Market add atmosphere that neither Bangkok nor Phuket replicated for us. Krabi has a character that’s its own — not just “another beach destination.”
Transport tips — Grab vs Bolt in Krabi?
Use Bolt. Across Bangkok, Krabi, and Phuket, Bolt was consistently cheaper than Grab. Fares are transparent and drivers don’t overcharge. For short distances within Ao Nang, walking is faster than waiting for a cab. For the airport journey, taxi counters at Krabi Airport are reliable — we paid 600 THB for four people with luggage (SUV), which was fair.
What about the TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card)?
Required before flying to Thailand. Complete it within 72 hours before your arrival date at tdac.immigration.go.th. You need your passport number, flight details, and first hotel address. Approval is instant — save the confirmation on your phone and optionally print it. Immigration may ask for it, along with your return ticket and hotel booking confirmation.
SIM card or eSIM for Thailand?
eSIM if your phone supports it — hands down. Activates the moment you land, no queue, no physical SIM swapping. Buy from Klook or Airalo before you travel. A 10-day unlimited data pack on AIS or True costs around $12–15 and is more than sufficient. If your phone doesn’t support eSIM, AIS, DTAC, and True all have counters inside arrivals at Bangkok’s airports.
🚫 What We Skipped and Whether We Regret It
⚠️ Our One Real Regret — Tiger Cave Temple 1,260 steps up a steep cliff to a panoramic viewpoint over jungle and mountains. Multiple travellers in our guesthouse who’d done it called it one of the best things in Krabi. We ran out of time. If you have four nights, add this. Go early (7-8 AM) to avoid the worst heat, bring lots of water, watch for monkeys stealing your snacks.
Muay Thai fight night — Ao Nang has a stadium with regular matches. We didn’t prioritise it, but travellers who love Thai culture consistently say it’s a great evening experience. Thursday nights are popular.
4 Islands Tour — covers Tup Island, Chicken Island, Poda Island, and Phra Nang Cave. A more relaxed alternative to the Phi Phi speedboat tour, with shorter travel times. Good for those who want island-hopping without the full-day intensity.
Rock climbing at Railay — world-class limestone climbing that draws serious climbers globally. Several climbing schools operate on Railay and will kit you out fully. The routes visible from Railay West Beach looked extraordinary.
🎯 Our Final Verdict on Krabi
We went to Krabi expecting a beach destination. We left having experienced something that felt genuinely different from anywhere else we’ve been in Thailand or Southeast Asia. The limestone karsts rising from flat water, the complete inaccessibility of Railay, the blue pool that looks artificially coloured, the fire shows that appear every evening without any fanfare — Krabi has things that exist nowhere else in quite this combination.
Is it crowded in peak season? Yes. Does Ao Nang have some tourist-trap pricing and that unfortunate canal? Yes. Did Maya Bay feel slightly rushed? Also yes. None of that diminished the experience. Railay Beach alone is worth the flight to Krabi. The rest is a bonus.
Our recommendations in order of priority: Railay Beach (non-negotiable), Phi Phi Island Tour (spectacular), Hot Springs + Emerald Pool (unexpectedly wonderful), and Tiger Cave Temple if you have four nights.
